Black kitchens on trend for 2015

Black Fox, Caviar, and Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams

A black kitchen? According to Denise Dick, vice president of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, this versatile neutral is a 2015 design trend that is neither contemporary nor traditional and can be used in many different styles of decor. According to a recent Sherwin-Williams report, Dick began seeing black move into the kitchen about a decade ago with black kitchen islands, mantel hoods and cabinets.

“People became comfortable with that, and then went to the full black,” Dick said. “Now black is as acceptable as cherry once was.” But Dick notes that using black also means using the help of a design professional, because the appearance of black furnishings must take into account lighting, glazes and maintenance. Also, things like fingerprints, dust and watermarks will show up differently on black than they will on wood grain, Dick said.

The color marketing professionals at Sherwin-Williams have shared some of their favorite black hues, and the current favorites include Black Fox (SW 7020), an off-black with chocolate undertones; Caviar (SW 6990), a soft, sophisticated classic black; and Tricorn Black (SW 6258), Sherwin-Williams’ most popular black, a true black.
