Consumers spending more on home textiles

According to an article in the March 22, 2015 issue of Home & Textiles Today magazine, consumer spending has increased in the area of home textiles. Consumers spent $21.6 billion on home textiles in 2014, a 2 percent increase over the previous year’s spending, and most of that spending was focused on textiles for the bedroom, said Debra Mednick, executive director and home industry analyst for The NPD Group, Inc.

Mednick noted that tabletops and baths also contributed to the increase in spending on textiles, and she said that using new textiles allows consumers to “showcase their personal style while giving their home a fresh new look.” She also noted that those under 35 drove nearly every major category segment, with these younger consumers likely establishing their homes.

The article reported that 2014 spending on bed covers was up 12 percent; bath linens, 8 percent; and table linens, 9 percent.
