The term ‘rustic’ usually has one of two effects when mentioned regarding interior design. Most people either love the idea or absolutely detest the notion of rustic elements in their home. To all you nay-sayers, fear  not! A rustic design or element does not have to include floor to ceiling wood paneling, cows in the backyard or even a wood burning stove in the kitchen.

Can rustic meet modern?

There is something to be gained by even the tiniest touch of rustic flare in even the most modern of spaces. Whether it is a salvaged stump as an end table, an oversized clock made out of barn wood above your sofa or a patina bird cage holding decorative soaps in the bathroom – a rustic touch brings any home a sense of establishment and history. There is something about the age and wear of a rustic accessories that makes a room more comfortable and welcoming. Old signs, random sized metal letters or even a handful of skeleton keys can add a distinguished bit of yester-year to your decor. You don’t have to go all out and fill your home with rusted soda pop memorabilia, unless of course, that is your “thing”. If so, maybe save those elements for the man cave or game room in your home!

Are you ready to create a fabulous dining room atmosphere in your home?  The dining room is a wonderful place to let your style shine.  There are two main aspects you should think about when deciding on a look for your dining room: lighting and color.  Both can be used to create a unique dining room experience.  This week, let us look at what different types of lighting can do for your dining room.

Lighting choices for dining rooms

As you can see from the photos posted, each of the three dining rooms that Panoply designed has different styles of lighting.  Notice the casual chandelier in dining room #1. Chandeliers are great in dining rooms, but not all chandeliers have to be fancy.  The mini lamp shades on this chandelier and the lower lighting it creates, gives the room a casual and romantic feel that you could not accomplish with a more formal chandelier.

Dining room #2 is a perfect example of how to use a formal chandelier to create an upscale, lavish dining room atmosphere. Notice the crystal embellishments giving this chandelier a classic formal look.  If you desire a breathtaking, elegant dining room – a formal chandelier is the way to go.

As you can see, the lighting in dining room #3 is vastly different than the first two – creating, in turn, a vastly different style of room.  The recessed lighting in this room goes perfectly with the modern atmosphere designed in this room.  This is an open area that connects to other rooms, so the recessed lighting integrates beautifully with the other rooms that are in view.

Have you ever tried your hand at decoupage? Decoupage is simply the technique of decorating the surface of an object with paper cut outs. You know where we are going with this, right? Decoupage with leftover wallpaper! We love the idea of using leftover wallpaper on tabletops.  Maybe you have a table that isn’t looking quite as “fresh” as it used to.  Simply cut the wallpaper to fit the top of the table, paint the top of the table with decoupage glue (you can find at any hobby or craft store), stick the wallpaper on, and coat with several layers of decoupage glue.  You will probably want to finish the top by spraying on a clear sealant. And Voila! A brand-new table at minimum cost.

Do you have a plain, wood headboard that you have been wondering how to ‘jazz’ up?  Use that leftover wallpaper! Just cut the wallpaper to size and attach it according to it’s regular, manufacturer instructions. It’s so easy, anyone can do it! In no time at all, and with no added cost, you can have an original, unique, and brilliant headboard.

Take the same general idea to other furniture in your house.  Do you have a dresser that is boring, or looking a little ‘used’? Give it a fresh coat of paint or stain and attach cut to size pieces of wallpaper to the front of the dresser drawers and doors.  You could also attach wallpaper to the backs of open cabinets or to cabinet doors for a fresh, new look.

As you can see, the options are practically limitless. So next time you decide to use wallpaper, make sure you hang on to those scraps. They can come in handy!

While we were doing a little holiday research, we kept coming across questions from people wondering how they could get their home smelling great for holiday gatherings and parties.  Of course, this is not really our specialty, but we thought some of these ideas were so great that we wanted to share them.

Store-bought air fresheners are typically the standby and some even smell really fantastic, but they contain so many chemicals that many don’t use them.  So we have found two great, chemical-free ways to scent your home.  If you have a really great idea on how to give your home a lovely fragrance for the holidays, we would love it if you stopped by our Facebook page and shared the tip with our online community!

Tip 1: Good food equals great smells.

One of our favorite ideas was using food to scent your home.  Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly baked bread, a batch of delicious chocolate chip cookies, or an apple or cherry pie?  On top of giving your home a glorious scent, you will have dessert all ready for your guests.  If you don’t have time to bake something in the oven, you can simmer herbs or spices in water on the top of your stove to give your home a great scent for your guests to enjoy.  Cinnamon is a year-round favorite.  Throw some cinnamon sticks in a pot of water and let simmer for a long lasting fragrance.  Just be careful about keeping your stove on for too long, especially if it requires an open flame – as this can be dangerous.  You will also want to make sure that the water doesn’t completely evaporate out, burning any herbs or spices on the bottom of your pan.

Tip 2: Herbs aren’t just for cooking.

If you are not too keen on the idea of cooking baked goods or simmering herbs and spices, but you do have a green-thumb, planting herbs in indoor pots or in a window box is another wonderful way to give your home a great fragrance. Sage, rosemary, basil, thyme, mint, and lavender are very strong scented herbs and would create a lovely scent for your kitchen.  Not only will they make your kitchen smell great, you will also have fresh herbs on hand!  Your guests will be impressed by your herb garden as well.  There are also other houseplants that you could have place around your home to keep your home smelling nice all the time.   Some people say that a Cosmos Daisy will actually make your house smell like chocolate.  A lemon balm plant will give your home a nice citrus smell and a sage called the Salvia elegans will give off a scent similar to pineapples.  If you already have houseplants and don’t want to acquire any more – you can hide orange peels in your potted plants for a nice citrus-y smell.
